Educating the Whole

Our task at Maris Stella is to build character and to equip our children for life; we are concerned with developing each individual spiritually, academically and morally. It is our desire to produce capable, thoughtful, strong, yet gentle well-balanced people and we encourage each pupil, irrespective of race, colour or creed, to develop to the full.

Maris Stella has an excellent academic record.  Qualified, experienced staff  teach a wide-ranging curriculum. The school has an excellent teacher-pupil ratio and teachers are encouraged to be creative in their teaching methods.

An excellent academic record exists at the school, with outstanding results achieved by the pupils in the Independent Examinations Board Matriculation Examination, with a 100% Matriculation Exemption rate in 2005.

  • In total 98 subject ‘A’s’ were achieved by the 67 matric girls of 2005.
  • 24 out of 67 girls achieved an ‘A’ aggregate
  • 36% achieved a ‘B’ aggregate, ie 75% of girls achieved a ‘B’ or above for their aggregate.

In the last decade, Maris Stella has been at the forefront of educational innovation and inclusion within the school sector. It is pursuing a number of international links and exchange partnerships, and is regarded as able to be a significant player by both the Independent Schools Association of South Africa and the Independent Examinations Board as well as the Catholic Institute of Education.

The academic programme, which is offered at Maris Stella, is that which is prescribed by the Department of Education. The pupils study the curriculum as laid down in the Revised National Curriculum Statements (GET Phase) and The National Curriculum statements (FET Phase). They write the GETC and the FET National Senior Certificate through the IEB.
