Welcome to Maris Stella Prep School
Considered one of the best private primary schools in Durban, the Prep phase at Maris Stella
is a vibrant, busy place where each girl receives a quality, holistic education reflecting our values and ethos.
Why Maris Stella Prep School?
Students are encouraged, challenged and supported in a range of relevant, academic and extra-curricular activities, including leadership. Whilst we teach within the framework of the new Curriculum Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS), we are constantly extending our girls through developing problem-solving and critical thinking skills. This integrated learning allows our girls a happy and smooth transition into high school.
In the Senior Primary, girls form a bond with their homeroom teachers where class teaching takes place in the core subjects of English, Afrikaans and mathematics. Cultural subjects such as religious education, isiZulu, art, technology, computers, music and drama are introduced through specialist teachers. Many Prep girls also take part in fun inter-school competitions, such as the Kids Lit Quiz, maths relays, public speaking and drama festivals.
We are part of the IEB (Independent Examination Board) Primary Schools Initiative and ISASA (Independent Schools Association of Southern Africa) shared assessments, which assists us to monitor both the girls’ and teachers’ progress. Girls receive recognition for their academic achievements at the end of the year at our prestigious Speech Day.
The Prep school participates both competitively and socially in the following sports:
- Action netball
- Outdoor netball
- Indoor hockey
- Outdoor hockey
- Water polo
- Synchronised swimming
Senior Primary girls attend various sporting tournaments and festivals throughout the year. Music, drama and art form an integral part of the curriculum. Prep girls participate in various choir festivals, literary quizzes, speech and drama festivals, art exhibitions and public speaking and debating fixtures. Annual Prep productions, cultural evenings and talent shows also give the Prep girls opportunities to showcase their talents.
- Coding club
- Online chess club
- Eco Kids
- Drama club
- Art club
- Public speaking
Private teachers provide tutelage on campus in piano, flute, cello, clarinet, guitar, drama, ballet, modern dance, tap dancing, hip-hop dancing and rhythmic gymnastics.
A homework centre is available for Prep girls who need to remain at school during the afternoons. The girls may attend the homework centre on a regular basis ie. on a set day or days per term, or on a casual basis. Some homework is supervised, though parents are encouraged to still play a part in checking their daughter’s homework. Outdoor and indoor games and refreshments are provided during the afternoon. Pupils are required to be picked up by 4.45pm.
Living our Faith
Senior Primary girls are encouraged to exercise Gospel values in their daily lives. Each class supports a charity chosen together by the girls and teachers. Here girls are given the opportunity to develop a strong sense of social responsibility and service as they work as a team towards helping others in our community.
They participate enthusiastically in outreach programmes and their personal spiritual growth is nurtured through:
- Worshipping together as a school community in weekly assemblies and termly Masses
- Annual class retreats
- Weekly religious education classes
- Weekly Communion services (attendance is voluntary)
- Visiting and assisting with class and school charities
The Prep school has a close working relationship with both the Foundation and Senior phases of our school. Prep girls are encouraged to strive for excellence in all aspects of school life, where an ethos of mutual respect, responsibility and care is emphasised. Learning is fun and we fully embrace all learning opportunities both inside and outside the classroom.
Our girls are given many opportunities to develop leadership qualities and skills, with each Grade 7 girl choosing a particular leadership portfolio.
