Why our Senior Primary?

A message from our Head of Department

Your daughter is surrounded by support, encouraged to try their best in everything they do and to stay positive and grow holistically.

At Maris Stella Senior Primary we strive to create a sense of belonging whilst embarking on a journey of ongoing learning with our girls. We strive towards enjoying each day and making learning fun, where girls are free to explore and set new goals.

We provide a safe and happy environment where each pupil receives a quality, holistic education reflecting our values and ethos. Students are encouraged, challenged, and supported in a range of academic, and extra-curricular activities.

As an IEB Primary School we identify with teaching within the framework of the Curriculum Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS), whilst fully extending our girls through developing problem-solving and critical thinking skills. This integrated learning approach equips our girls with a strong foundation for academic success in High School.

Why our Senior Primary?

Students are encouraged, challenged and supported in a range of relevant, academic and extra-curricular activities, including leadership. Whilst we teach within the framework of the new Curriculum Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS), we are constantly extending our girls through developing problem-solving and critical thinking skills. This integrated learning allows our girls a happy and smooth transition into high school.

Academic Programme

In the Senior Primary, girls form a bond with their homeroom teachers where class teaching takes place in the core subjects of English, Afrikaans and mathematics. Cultural subjects such as religious education, isiZulu, art, technology, computers, music and drama are introduced through specialist teachers.

Many Senior Primary girls also take part in fun inter-school competitions, such as the Kids Lit Quiz, maths relays, public speaking and drama festivals.

We are part of the IEB (Independent Examination Board) Primary Schools Initiative and ISASA (Independent Schools Association of Southern Africa) shared assessments, which assists us to monitor both the girls’ and teachers’ progress. Girls receive recognition for their academic achievements at the end of the year at our prestigious Speech Day.

Why our Senior Primary?

Homework Centre

A homework centre is available for Senior Primary girls who need to remain at school during the afternoons. The girls may attend the homework centre on a regular basis ie. on a set day or days per term, or on a casual basis.

Some homework is supervised, though parents are encouraged to still play a part in checking their daughter’s homework. Outdoor and indoor games and refreshments are provided during the afternoon. Pupils are required to be picked up by 16h45.

Extra Mural Activities

Our Senior Primary school participates both competitively and socially in sports and attend local and inter-provincial tournaments and festivals throughout the year.

Cultural activities form an integral part of the curriculum. Senior Primary girls participate in various choir festivals, literary quizzes, speech and drama festivals, art exhibitions and public speaking and debating fixtures. Annual Senior Primary productions, cultural evenings and talent shows also give the Senior Primary girls opportunities to showcase their talents.
